Senator or Preacher?
Senator Manny Pacquiao did it again. He quoted another bible verse during one of the senate meetings and started preaching about morality. We understand that he is a Christian and he have his faith but I personally think that the senate is the right place to preach. Personal beliefs and practices should be confined in the walls of his home and in his church. Most business establishments or companies even have a rule about topics that are considered as NOT SAFE FOR WORK and religion is one of them.
Back on May of 2016, he supported death penalty in the belief that this is approved by the bible. He even provided the bible verse of his reference. He quoted, "Sa Romans 13, basahin natin 'yang one to seven. Malalaman natin 'yan. (In Romans 13:1-7, you've got to read it,)" he said.
"Hindi naman ang presidente ang maghahatol niyan, kun'di ang government. (It's not the president who will pass the verdict but the government)"
"Sa mata ng Panginoon, hindi bawal 'yan,"(On the eyes of god, this is not wrong.) Pacquiao added.
Currently, on Last weeks, session February 13, he once again invoked a saying in the Bible about cross dressing. He said that men should dress as men and women should dress as women. He even reopened the topic of the Laude murder case where an american navy, Pemberton killed a transgender in Subic, Zambales back in 2014.
Ano ba gagawin natin diyan na nagdamit babae yung lalaki tapos nabigla yung lalaki na lalaki ka pala, eh pinatay," (What can we do about it? A man dressed as a woman then we will soon find out that he;'s a man. So he was killed.) The Senator said.
He claimed that the bill will pose a threat to the society. He believes that women could be in danger if transgenders will be allowed to use the same bathrooms. He claimed that even in Laude's case, it was degraded to homicide from murder because of grounds of deception.
However, both Senators Leila de Lima and Risa Hontiveros defended the case of Laude. Sen. De Lima corrected Pacquiao by saying that the case was never degraded. Hontiveros also emphasized that the case calls for more security for the LGBT community. It is essential to have the bill passed so that the same incident could be prevented in the future.
The session is supposedly to discuss about Senate Bill 1271 which aims to fight discrimination against the LGBT community. If the bill passes, transgenders will then be allowed women's restrooms and some comfort rooms will be created exclusively for them.
I can understand where Paquiao is coming from since he is a Christian. But if he is basing all of his decisions on the bible, then I suggest that he quit politics and become a preacher instead. We needed someone to pass laws for the benefit of everyone; not someone who is biased and blinded by their religious bigotry.
